Here we would like to try and communicate some basic information regarding interlocking concrete pavers as a structural and aesthetic alternative to concrete and asphalt. There are hundreds of different paver manufacturers out there and we have worked with at least 15 different manufacturers over as many years. Below are some quick links to the paver manufacturers that we prefer to use primarily because of manufacturing quality and lasting color that doesn't fade. Over years of experience installing paver surfaces and the complimentary retaining walls we know what brands will discolor and what brands don't. Price point does matter in this regard...in most cases a cheap paver won't have the same quality attributes as a more expensive paver.
1) Unilock (Hands down the best quality we have seen but more costly than other brands.)
2) Pavestone (Manufactured in Hagerstown, MD, popular color blends and low efflorecence output.)
3) Belgard (Nice Color Blends, large selection of concrete pavers & wall systems.)
4) CST (Supplied locally, most cost effective, selection is limited and natural texturing looks fake.)
Both standard and vehicular pavers are installed by the same simple process. First we excavate the proposed area to 8-12" deep (in some cases depending on soil compaction we may go deeper). We fill in crusher run gravel(compactable gravel). The gravel is then fine leveled for drainage and appropriate slope for water runoff. This gravel is then compacted with a special plate compactor. Next, builders sand or even limestone dust can be used to apply a 1" deep bedding level that the pavers will sit on. This sand is fine graded using screed rails for a perfecly level sidewalk or patio. The pavers are laid next to fill in the appropriate area.
NOTE: Throughout 2010 we have started offering a different construction method utilizing a thin layer of concrete directly beneath the pavers to prevent long term settling. Though this concrete pad typically adds to the cost...we see it as a great option for increasing the weight that the paved area can support and also prevent heaving & settling issues with our freeze thaw climate. We will be recommending this often in 2011.
Permeable pavers have a slightly different base makeup. The levels are constructed to allow water to penetrate. If this is something you would be interested in just give us a call and we would be happy to go over it with you.
There are many factors that determine the final cost of a patio or sidewalk project. Factors that may vary the cost are: depth of excavation to stable soil, type and brand of paver selected (material cost), easy machine access to cut back on hand labor, and existing conditions (if there is an existing slab or tree that needs to be moved/removed, thats going to require more labor). Another large factor is whether or not the pattern will be curved. Curvy sidewalks and patios require much more cutting and detail work to make it turn out nice.
With that being said, typically with easy machine access to the project site, and we assume the paved area will sit on at grade elevation, pavers will run anywhere from $15 per square foot to $30 per square foot (installed) depending on some of the issues above. If you would like some options, please contact Daniel Lucas 301-334-3069 to get some ideas for your specific budget and location. To do some quick calculation on your own, say you would like a roughly 15'X15' patio area. Multiply the length by the width and that gives you 225 square feet total (225 square feet X $15 per square foot = $3,375). It is also important to note that all of our work is guaranteed for a period of one year after job completion.
When considering a paver project it is always good to give us a call and set up a site meeting with Daniel. He will come out with some color catalogs and really go over the different styles and pricing from each manufacturer.
Below are some photos of various paver projects we have completed over the years. Feel free to click on any image for a larger view. If there is something in particular that you like, print it out and show it to us. We can help you achieve the same look.
