Hardy landscape plants (Deep Creek Lake & Oakland, Maryland)
All of the plants you see listed on this page are proven selections for western Maryland. Although every job site is unique, with varying microclimates, this list should help you out with some basic knowledge of the plants that grow well in this area. If you have access to a USDA plant hardiness map, you will see most of the time that Garrett County sits in the Zone 5a/b area. However, most areas around Deep Creek Lake, Canaan Valley and Oakland, the microclimates are more like a zone 3-4 (the lower the number the colder the climate, higher number means warmer climate). So..if you prefer to do some research on your own, keep in mind that it is always a good idea to look for plants recommended for USDA zones 4-5 for best results (zone 3 plants are even more cold hardy). Now....lets get to our list. Click on any of the small plant thumbnail images below to see a larger version.
Evergreen Conifers and Trees (Stay Green All Year Long)
 |
Concolor Fir
Scientific Name: Abies concolor'
Zones: 3-8
Mature Height: 30'
Mature Spread: 15'
Availability: 4', 6', 8'-10', 12' tall |
Concolor Fir
Probably our favorite evergreen conifer in terms of look and feel. The needles are long and very soft to the touch. One of the best traits of this tree is color variety. You can plant several trees in a row and they all will turn out to be slightly different shades of green to bright blue. An awesome tree. Very slow growing. Due to popularity this tree is easiest to find in early spring. By mid summer most nurseries have stopped digging and the only other digging time is late fall. Deer Resistant. |
 |
Colorado Blue Spruce
Scientific Name: Picea pungens
Zones: 3-8
Mature Height: 40'
Mature Spread 20'
Availability: 4', 6', 8'-10', 12' tall
Varieties: 'Globosa' |
Colorado Blue Spruce
One of the most popular trees around here. All the landscapers use them and they are always readily available through local sources. The bright blue color is really pretty consistent from tree to tree and it looks great. But don't get too close. Those needles are sharp as hell and will easily pierce your skin. Best in a screen situation where people won't be getting up close and personal with the tree. Deer Resistant. |
 |
Norway Spruce
Scientific Name: Picea abies 'norway'
Zones: 2-7
Mature Height: 50'
Mature Spread: 25'
Availability: 4', 6', 8'-10', 12' tall |
Norway Spruce
Another one of the most planted trees in Garrett County. You will see one in almost every yard. Shorter and slightly softer needles than the Blue Spruce. Major difference is color. The norway has a very consistant dark green color (no bluish tint). It grows fast and makes an ideal windbreak or tall screen. The leafty new growth that comes out every year are used commercially to flavor spruce beer. Deer Resistant. |
 |
Canadian Hemlock
Scientific Name: Tsuga canadensis
Zones: 3-7
Mature Height: 40'
Mature Spread: 20'
Light & Moisture: partial shade to full sun.
likes sustained moisture
Shade |
Canadian Hemlock
A great evergreen tree and one of our favorites. Dark green color and tiny needles make for a very finely textured tree that is soft to the touch. Hemlock's are shade tolerant but also do great in full sun. A great contrast to the spruces and firs listed above. Great when your trying to pull off a rustic/woodsy type planting theme. |
 |
Alaskan Cedar
Scientific Name: Juniperus Cedar
Zones: 3-8
Mature Height: 20'
Mature Spread: 10' |
Alaskan Cedar
A relatively new plant to this area. The alaskan cedar is a visually striking plant with its dark green weeping foliage. Looks great as an individual specimen planted at a prominent corner or focal point. Throw in some large boulders and dark mulch and it really stands out in the landscape. As it's name suggests, this plant is very cold hardy and can tolerate our sometimes brutal winters. Deer Resistant. |
 |
Arborvitae
Scientific Name: Thuja occidentalis
Zones: 3-7
Mature Height: 8'-20''
Mature Spread: 3'-5'
Light & Moisture: partial shade to full sun.
Varieties: 'Techny', 'Green Giant',
'Emerald' |
Arborvitae
Common plant to this area. Typically used in a screen condition. Also works great as a corner accent where something taller but somewhat narrow is called for. Color varies from dark green to bright green. Soft to the touch with a fine texture different from that of a pine/spruce/hemlock tree. Does not have needles. More like flattened freyed leather. A great choice for any landscape, very hardy with little problems and maintenance required. |
 |
Austrian Pine
Scientific Name: Pinus 'nigra'
Zones: 3-8
Mature Height: 30'
Mature Spread: 15' |
Austrian Pine
Long, stiff needles with a great medium green color. Commonly used near roadways and driveways where salt damage is an issue. This tree can handle some of the "salt & wind barrage" that our plows hand out every winter where the spuce and fir won't. We like the unique texture that can be noticed immediately among other conifers. Deer Resistant. |
 |
Dwarf Alberta Spruce
Scientific Name: Picea glauca 'albertiana'
Zones: 3-7
Mature Height: 5-6'
Mature Spread: 2'-3'
Varieties: 'Conica' |
Dwarf Alberta Spruce
Smaller evergreen tree with medium to bright green color. Fine texture with short spikey needles. Somewhat sharp to the touch but not nearly as bad as the blue spruce or some junipers. Great for corner accents, arrival courtyards, and works good as an entrance accent for either side of your front door. They make nice topiary plants as well. If you are looking for a spiral topiary, they are available using this plant. Deer Resistant. |

Scientific Name: Ilex opaca
Zones: 5-9 (needs wind protection)
Mature Height: 25' (in Garrett County)

American Holly
We are on the fringe of its northernmost growth zone. A family relative who lived in Bruceton Mills, WV had one in the front yard for the last 30 years and it did great. For colder conditions where temperatures drop below zero like ours we recommend the 'Jersey Princess' variety. Deer Resistant. |
 |
White Pine
Scientific Name: Pinus strobus
Zones: 2-8

Hosta & Lily of the Valley
Scientific Name: see description
|
Hosta & Lily of the Valley
There are so many varieties of hosta available today that it is hard to give a simple comparison. Hostas do great in shade and have a very nice glossy big-leaf foliage. Lily of the Valley is a different type of plant but people often confuse them. Lily of the Valley has vertical growing leaves that are like 3-4" wide glossy/dull blades that come straight up out of the ground. Great when used as a full shade groundcover. Also deer won't bother it. Hosta 'First Frost' won PPA best hosta of 2010. |
