Introduction

Adam LucasLucas Landscaping & Turf Farm grows Maryland Certified Sod. We serve Garrett County, Deep Creek Lake, Morgantown WV and surrounding areas. The sod farm here in Pleasant Valley has been in operation for going on some 20 years.  We grow both a bluegrass variety and a bluegrass/fescue mix which utilizes the best traits of each species to create one amazing looking lawn.  If you are building a new home or simply dealing with a weed ridden existing lawn, we can help.

Most of the sod we sell is put to use on new construction projects from Deep Creek Lake to Morgantown and even Pittsburgh.  Laying down sod gives the homeowner or business client an immediate visual impact upon completion.  There is no waiting involved or seed wash outs to worry about when it rains.  The grass is pure from the get go and eliminates many of the problems concerning weeds and impure seed mixtures. Once installed, just set up some simple water hose sprinklers and keep it wet until the roots have taken hold. Sod is installed much like you would install carpet in a home, except the individual pieces are smaller and it goes together quickly and easily.

Trebo

If you are interested in getting a price quote please feel free to contact Adam Lucas (301) 616-0638.  Adam handles all aspects of the sod operation including operating the cutting machine, sales and delivery. About 3 years ago we aquired a new Trebo Sod Harvestor machine. This machine seen here in the photos, allows a single person to easily cut the sod. In the past, we used an older machine that required three men total (one driving the tractor and two on the back stacking pallets). The Trebo also provides a much higher level of quality in the individual pieces. Pieces are consistant in size and durability. If you have ever tried to lay sod that is cut too thin or rips easily, you will know exactly what we're talking about.

How is sod it sold? Pallet Details.

palletSod is typically sold by the pallet. A full pallet covers approx. 700 square feet (78 square yards). A full pallet weighs about 1-1/2 tons (3000 lbs max.), in some cases when the soil is damp, it adds extra moisture weight to the full pallet. Three thousand (3,000) pounds is really a worst case scenario.   In relatively dry conditions a pallet will normally weigh about 2,200 lbs.  So, if you are coming to the farm to pick up a pallet, just be sure that your truck is suited for the task.

Whats the expense? Sod Versus Seeding.

Sod FarmSome people will say that sod is much more expensive when compared with seeding a lawn.  Given perfect conditions on a relatively level, sunny jobsite with perfect soil....this could be true. However, in the mountains of Garrett County you rarely see all three of these key aspects on a jobsite. We typically encounter jobs where slopes and soils are not ideal seeding conditions. If the slopes are steep, you run the risk of seed washing out in a rainstorm. If the soil is clay and rocky (normally is), you run the risk of seed not germinating properly and growing in thin in spots creating a "patchy" appearance.

So.....what seems like a cheap solution in the beginning vary well may end up costing more than sod in the long run after fixing various washouts, spending money on chemicals and/or lawn service to get rid of weeds, and in the end you may still have small visual issues with "patchy" areas.  Ultimately this decision belongs to the homeowner, but we have listed some important issues to consider in making that decision.  With sod you may spend more money up front...but the cost will be offset by the maintenance and headache involved with seed in the long run.

Two types of sod we grow.

Sod CuttingHere at the turf farm, we grow two types of sod. The first is a mixture of 10% bluegrass and 90% fescue. This variety typically has a brighter green coloring when compared to the darker blueish green bluegrass. This fescue mix also has a wider grass blade. As we mentioned, the bluegrass has a deep blue/green color and fine texture. Both varieties are designed to do great in our local climate. If you would like to see the difference in the field for yourself, just give Adam or Daniel a call and we can set up a time to take a look.
